Fat transfer is the ultimate in recycling. Patients provide their own facial filler through the liposuction of an area such as the tummy, thighs, inner knees or arms. The fat is transferred through a tiny incision in the face to restore smoothness and volume to areas of deficiency on the face. Filling in hollows and improving the fullness and shape in the creases near the eyes, cheeks, and folds surrounding the nose and mouth are typical locations for transfer. The volume of fat available to transfer is much greater and much less expensive than commercial fillers, making fat transfer more effective and efficient. Fat transfer also has the potential to last for years, although the exact amount of fat retained over time cannot be determined in advance of the procedure. A second, follow-up procedure to add more fat may be necessary in the future.

Fat transfers generally require two hours in our IMQ-accredited surgery center located at the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center of Tennessee. This outpatient procedure allows our patients to be discharged to home following the surgery.

Most patients recover from fat transfer treatments rapidly, though it is common to have bruising and some degree of swelling for up to two weeks. The amount of bruising and swelling varies from person to person. Discomfort is generally minimal and easily controlled for most of our patients. Final results may take several weeks fully develop.
