What Is an Arm-Lift Surgery?
Are your arms not as toned and thin as you would like them to be? Do you feel self-conscious when wearing sleeveless tops and dresses and clothing with thin straps due to excess upper-arm fat and loose skin?
There are many reasons why excess fat and loose skin appear in the upper-arm region, such as fluctuations in weight, age, and heredity. These factors can cause the upper arms to have a drooping appearance.
Sagging skin and fat can be very hard to get rid of and often do not respond to diet and exercise. In such cases, you might need something a little more effective than exercise and diet to get rid of that pesky arm flab – you may need an arm lift.
What Is an Arm Lift?
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty surgery, reshapes and tightens the upper arms. It trims away the excess skin and stubborn fat from the upper arms to give your arms a more toned and shaped appearance.
An arm lift is a cosmetic procedure that can:
• Reduce the excess sagging skin that droops downward from the arms
• Reduce the localized pockets of fat that form in the upper region of the arms
• Tighten and smooth out the underlying supportive arm tissues that define and shape the upper arms
Who Is a Good Candidate for an Arm Lift?
An arm lift may be the right option for you if the underside region of your upper arms droops and bulges due to excess skin and fat.
The following people are considered to be good candidates for arm-lift surgery:
• Adults who have a significant amount of laxity in the upper-arm region
• Adults of any age who are at a relatively stable weight and are not significantly overweight
• Individuals who are overall in good health and don’t have serious medical conditions that could impair the healing process or increase the risk of surgical complications
• Non-smokers
• Individuals who have an overall positive outlook and realistic expectations from the procedure
The Arm Lift: What to Expect
First, you will be administered with either local anesthesia and IV sedation or general anesthesia. Then Dr. Kaye will make incisions on the inside of the arms or on the back of the arms. The incisions may extend from the underarm area (called the axilla) all the way to just above the elbow region.
Dr. Kaye will then remove the excess fat and skin. The skin will be carefully removed with a scalpel, and the fat may be directly removed or removed with liposuction. The underlying supportive tissues will be tightened and then reshaped using internal sutures.
Finally, Dr. Kaye will redrape the remaining skin over the new contours of your arms. The incisions will be closed using sutures, which will be removed one to two weeks after the surgery.
