Neck Lift to Help the Appearance of Skin Aging

The natural processes of aging can cause the skin along your neck and under your jaw to lose elasticity. The skin can start to sag or develop unappealing fatty deposits. A rhytidectomy also known as a neck lift can mitigate the effects of skin aging on your neck. It’s not uncommon for a neck lift to be performed along with a face lift.

A neck lift usually requires you to be sedated. You will need to arrange to have someone drive you and help you at home while you get back on your feet.

During the procedure the surgeon makes an incision that traces hairline at the level of the sideburn and along the natural crease and contours of the neck and jaw. The incision continues down and around the ear and ends in the other side of the neck. This incision strategy minimizes noticeable scarring.

If you have excess fatty deposits in your neck the surgeon might perform some minor liposuction or liposculpture to give your neck back a natural contour.

Once completed the surgeon removes some of the excess skin from the neck and closes the incision with fine stitches, skin adhesive or other bandage dressing. The surgeon might also insert a thin tube to help drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect under the skin.

The surgeon might also prescribe pain killers or anti-inflammatory medication to help with any discomfort during recovery. You should avoid using ice packs to help manage discomfort in the neck as this can compromise blood flow and potentially damage healing tissues.
