What Is a Breast Lift?

As we age, skin and breast tissue starts to lose elasticity and give way to the constant pull of gravity. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also cause breast and skin tissue to swell and expand for a short period of time, the afterward the breasts do not return to their original placement or shape.

A breast lift or mastopexy procedure raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. This helps to reshape the breast and offer it renewed support. Breast lift procedures have continued to grow in popularity and availability in recent years.

The number of incisions your surgeon uses will vary depending on the current shape of your breast and your goals. An incision around the areola can be done to help influence placement and size. The surgeon might also make an incision down from the areola to remove skin which helps pull the breast up. The third type of incision includes the areola and a vertical incision down from the breast crease as well as horizontally along the breast crease. Often breast lifts are combined with breast augmentation (implants) to add volume and shape back to the breast.

Whenever possible your surgeon will try to make the incisions in a natural crease in the breast. However there are some instances where the incision will be in a more visible area. Overtime the incision lines will start to naturally fade.
